Freshman Anna Hirsch had a successful first match for Drake, scoring a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Laura Tracey.

From the coach: "Our doubles were really strong today," Drake's Renee Glenn said. "It's really important to get an early victory to build up the girls' confidence. It will help them see that they can hang with the teams in the MCAL. It's a tough league."

TERRA LINDA

Last Year: 10th Outlook: After a less than satisfying record last year, Terra Linda begins this season with a new coach and a new attitude. In the short time that new coach Cheryl Mittry has had with her team, she has been impressed. "I think we have a pretty good team this year," she said. "It looks like we have some pretty good talent." Terra Linda will rely on the talent of the younger returnees and the leadership of their seniors, including Hannah Eriksson, Eliza Scofield and Laura Tracey. The Trojans' top singles player from last year, Juliette Fechter, returns as a junior. The biggest unknown for Terra Linda is its young roster. Mittry is relying heavily on young talent to fill in the gaps in doubles. Terra Linda is a long shot to end up in the playoffs, they'll have trouble competing against some of the stronger, deeper teams.

Last word: "We're up against some pretty steep competition," Mittry said. "I know Redwood is pretty tough, Novato has come quite far. A lot of it is just self-confidence. But anything we do is a step up from last year."
